Propping, beams, hollow blocks, reinforcement and pouring the topping slab: the steps to a successful floor.

A beam-and-block floor goes up quickly without full formwork. Here are the steps, in order.
1. Prepare the supports
Walls or beams carrying the floor must be level. Beams should bear at least 5 cm on their supports.
2. Lay the beams and props
Lay the beams at the spacing on the drawings (often 60 cm), then prop them at mid-span or as the manufacturer advises.
3. Lay the hollow blocks
Blocks sit between the beams, on their heels. Start with a full row to check the spacing.
4. Reinforce
Place the top bars over the supports and the welded mesh for the topping slab.
5. Pour the topping slab
Wet the blocks, pour and vibrate the concrete. Respect the curing time before removing the props.
